Goeddel Family Technology Sandbox

When the Goeddel Family Technology Sandbox opened its doors on the UC San Diego campus on August 29, the cutting-edge facility immediately became a unique world-class resource for science, education, and training. A gathering point for top-flight scientific instruments, the Technology Sandbox is also a nexus for partnerships with the life sciences industry, including Thermo Fisher Scientific and Nikon Instruments.

Pipette Tip Recycling Program

UC San Diego has partnered with Thermo Fisher Scientific to develop a new pipette tip recycling program that leverages Thermo Scientific™ pipette tips. The program creates an end-of-life solution for pipette tips and racks by repurposing them into building materials such as recycled plastic lumber.

The new Technology Sandbox on the UC San Diego campus will enhance access to cutting-edge technologies and applications. This facility is designed to accelerate collaboration, discovery, technology transfer, workforce development, and data analytics.

Collaborative Research Framework

The partnership will create a collaborative research framework to increase and accelerate collaborative research, technology development, and innovation. The research will push the new frontiers of science, from cryo-EM to CRISPR to data science.

 

World-Class Talent Pipeline

The partnership establishes a world-class talent pipeline with the creation of new programs that drive equity, diversity, and inclusion as it attracts and develops top talent and future STEM leaders. 

Sustainable Supply Chain

The partnership will help transform the carbon footprints of UC San Diego and Thermo Fisher Scientific with a sustainable supply chain for research supplies. By increasing the use of environmentally friendly alternatives to commonly used materials and solutions, the efforts of this partnership will align with UC San Diego's goal of achieving zero waste and Thermo Fisher's ongoing commitment to sustainability.
