Bridging Procurement, Sustainability, and Passion

This quarter's IPPSter Spotlight is all about Lynda Ta, our Bid Process & Sustainability Specialist for IPPS. She began her journey at UC San Diego studying Economics and was a student employee for the Services Procurement team, where she started her career processing requisitions and drafting agreements. Upon graduating in 2018, Lynda quickly distinguished herself and dove into Strategic Sourcing.

Her expertise in CalUsource (a platform used for sourcing, contracting, and spend analysis) has been transformative. She manages over 30 annual RFPs (Request for Proposal) with suppliers across diverse departments, including IPPS, Real Estate, and Health. She has helped guide the Enterprise Systems Renewal and Student Information System projects. She is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and has been instrumental in groundbreaking initiatives such as sustainable cold-chain shipping, demonstrating a deep commitment to environmental responsibility.

Recognition has followed Lynda's innovative work. She presented at the National Association of Educational Procurement and the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council. She's collaborated with industry giants like Amazon to publish an online guide on sustainable purchasing and partnered with Thermo Fisher Scientific to have our labs recycle pipette tips. Her crucial contributions helped secure the AASHE STARS platinum award for the university -  the highest sustainability rating. She was also nominated for a Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council award, demonstrating how Lynda continually pushes the boundaries of procurement efficiency.

Lynda's story extends far beyond sustainable practices and strategic plans. She has quite an adventurous spirit and loves to travel. She recently went on a snowboarding trip in Japan and will hike the Havasupai Trail in Arizona later this year. Her culinary skills match her love for travel - Lynda is a pasta enthusiast who loves crafting fresh Pappardelle and Cascatelli. Another fun fact is that she loves to crochet and creates her own outfits when she goes to see live music!

Kristen Weidler by Ayaka Ikeda

kristen

I'm excited to shine a spotlight on Kristen Weidler, our Associate Director of Logistics, whose journey at UC San Diego began before her graduation in 2014 with double degrees in Biology and Psychology. Kristen was a student employee at Roger’s Market in Revelle, and after graduating, she joined UC San Diego's temporary pool.

Even though she studied STEM in college, her natural interest was business and finance. Her adaptability and eagerness to learn propelled her through various roles within the university - from administrative operations to finance, business development, and data analytics, before expanding into project management. As Associate Director, she oversees multiple critical teams, including Campus and Student Mail services, Passports, Moving Services, Surplus Sales, and the Logistics Business Operational Excellence team. Her role encompasses team supervision, financial management, strategic planning, and business development. Kristen particularly enjoys the mentorship aspect of her position, engaging in one-on-one sessions with her team members to ensure each unit meets its goals and initiatives.

When asked about bridging the gap between her science background and current role, Kristen shared an interesting perspective: her biology and psychology degrees proved unexpectedly valuable in IPPS, particularly in understanding laboratory equipment and connecting with scientific staff across campus. While much of her expertise was developed through hands-on experience, Kristen has consistently invested in her professional growth, earning a Finance Certificate from UC San Diego, completing Project Management Bootcamp, and achieving Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification. Currently pursuing a Master's degree in Operations Management at the University of Arkansas, she believes in balancing practical experience with formal education.

Throughout her career, Kristen has spearheaded several significant initiatives, including comprehensive Recharge Rate Reviews that revitalized Logistics' service pricing models and successfully implemented a Last Mile Dashboard, which optimized package delivery incentive reconciliation. One of her proudest achievements has been managing the expansion of The Trove locker program, which began during COVID and has since grown to multiple campus locations, including Revelle. Looking ahead, Kristen is particularly excited about the strategic planning she's implementing for Surplus Sales, applying concepts from her Master's studies to develop comprehensive mission and vision statements, conduct cultural and SWOT analyses, and establish measurable goals. Her approach to business planning is methodical and purpose-driven, ensuring that each initiative is grounded in solid business principles and contributes meaningfully to organizational success.

Beyond her professional achievements, Kristen maintains an active lifestyle that began with her years playing club and high school soccer - a passion she continues today as a member of a soccer league every Sunday. As a Bay Area native and a devoted 49ers fan, and occasionally attends San Diego Wave matches. This year marked a noteworthy milestone as she participated in her first San Diego Pride parade in Hillcrest, an experience she describes as authentic, liberating, and meaningful. Drawing from her own post-college challenges, Kristen has become a dedicated mentor, particularly passionate about supporting women, LGBTQ+, and other underrepresented individuals in the workplace. She openly welcomes conversations about everything from resume building to interview preparation and personal growth, channeling her experience into helping others navigate their career paths and thrive with fulfilled lives. Her commitment to nurturing talent extends to student retention, where she actively advocates for creating pathways for student employees to transition into contract or temporary positions, helping to bridge the gap between academic and professional life.

From her early days as a student to her current role as Associate Director of Logistics, Kristen's journey showcases the power of continuous learning and adaptability. Her unique combination of academic knowledge, hands-on experience, and ongoing passion for social justice enables her to excel in both the technical and leadership aspects of her work. Whether implementing innovative logistics solutions or mentoring emerging professionals, she brings the same dedication to everything she does. Kristen's story reminds us that while career paths aren't always linear, a commitment to growth and giving back can lead to meaningful success.

Makena Loop

by Ayaka Ikeda

We’re excited to shine the spotlight on Makena Loop in this summer 2024 issue of IPPS Quarterly! Makena is a valuable member of our Life Sciences Strategic Procurement team, where she holds the role of Senior Buyer.

Makena's journey to IPPS is as diverse as her international background. A UCLA graduate with a degree in Psychobiology, Makena's path led her through Spain, where she earned a master's in Healthcare, to Australia, and even teaching English in Italy before settling in San Diego. In July 2019, Makena joined IPPS as a temp hire, leveraging her extensive life sciences knowledge. Her unique perspective proved invaluable as the department transitioned towards a more science-oriented approach. Initially unsure about staying in San Diego, Makena found herself drawn to the team and the work, securing a full-time position just before the pandemic hit. Over her five-year tenure, she's evolved from a procurement-focused role to managing a variety of life sciences projects across campus, including vital supplier partnerships.

As the program manager for the sustainable supply chain aspect of the decade-long strategic partnership with Thermo Fisher Scientific (TFS), she's spearheaded innovative initiatives. Particularly, Makena and her team lead a pipette tip recycling program in campus labs, which TFS subsequently adopted nationwide. Her team is also at the forefront of the Credo project, aimed at eliminating Styrofoam from cold storage shipments by implementing reusable containers. These efforts showcase Makena's commitment to sustainability in procurement. Beyond environmental initiatives, Makena has made waves across the entire UC system by leading a successful antibody RFP project, resulting in four new beneficial contracts. Her strategic approach to procurement, moving beyond day-to-day tasks, has been a key highlight of her career. Amidst her professional accomplishments, Makena also achieved a personal milestone by earning her Project Management Professional (PMP) certification after a year of study while maintaining her full-time workload. Throughout her journey, Makena emphasizes the joy she finds in collaborating with her colleagues, underscoring the positive work environment at IPPS.

Beyond her professional life, Makena enjoys traveling the most, making it a point to embark on an international journey at least once a year. Her passion for travel has taken her to an impressive array of countries, including Spain, Italy, Australia, Portugal, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Denmark, Austria, Slovenia, New Zealand, Mexico, and Peru. As we delved deeper into her travels, our conversation expanded to the fascinating cultural differences we’ve encountered. Makena emphasized how the vibe of people and their openness varies significantly from country to country, profoundly influencing the overall experience within each culture. She contrasted the warm, welcoming atmosphere of Spain with the more reserved nature of Milan, Italy, noting how these cultural nuances shape one's interactions and perceptions. After experiencing pretty much most of Europe, Japan tops her bucket list for future adventures. By the way, she is probably in Brazil right now having the best time on her vacation. Makena’s global perspective not only enriches her personal life but also brings a unique, worldly approach to her role at IPPS.

Amanda Ochoa by Carol Chen

Amanda's dog and cat, her at YosemiteAmanda Ochoa

By Carol Chen

In this edition of the IPPS Quarterly, we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Ochoa, a Client Experience Analyst within our Client Experience Management (CXM) Team!

After graduating from UC San Diego, Amanda worked at a nearby employee recognition startup, focusing on travel and event planning for customers of all backgrounds. She led a team of 20-40 specialists and helped establish the customer relationship management (CRM) system there. Within this role, Amanda realized that supporting people to success was one of her passions. When UC San Diego posted the opening for her current role, she was excited to be able to work for her alma mater in something she was exceptionally passionate about.

As a Client Experience Analyst, Amanda helps oversee the Solutions team within CXM, processing and analyzing the massive volume of data that comes through in the form of inquiries or tickets about the many IPPS systems and processes. She serves as both a support staff and data analyst, answering questions about travel, procurement, and payables while also crunching numbers and analyzing data patterns. She uses this data to troubleshoot similar problems, update existing curriculum and training, and present solutions to other teams to tackle the root causes of inquiries. Amanda’s favorite part of the job is reaching those lightbulb moments of finding out which problem is causing widespread service issues– it reminds her always to consider the bigger picture and not tunnel vision on the nitty gritty details of individual questions.

Outside of work, Amanda loves to travel with her partner. One of her most memorable adventures was touring the Bay Area, coastal and central Oregon, Yosemite, and Reno - in one extensive road trip! As a California native, the incredible variety of landscapes and the diversity of culture, even just over a state border, never fails to amaze her, and the views are sights that she will never forget. Her appreciation of nature is also reflected at home. Amanda enjoys caring for her many pets: a charming three-legged dog named Ginger, a black cat named Joji (yes, after the singer), two leopard geckos, and 20-30 assorted fish, shrimp, and loaches. However, she considers herself a serial hobbyist. Along with traveling, Amanda also enjoys dancing, boxing, and surfing, the latter of which she considers one of her greatest passions. If you ever find yourself on a Zoom call with Amanda, you might notice the plethora of surfboards in her background – alongside her partner, she has collected over 20!

Kelli Sanchez Zamora by Ayaka Ikeda

Kelli headshot and rock climbing

Kelli Sanchez Zamora

By Ayaka Ikeda

Kelli Sanchez Zamora has been working at UC San Diego for 9 years now. Her IPPS career started at the Mailing Center as a student back in 2015 and progressed to IPPS HQ as a travel intern, after working as a student work lead and passports officer. Following graduation, she held positions as a Travel and Entertainment Specialist and Virtual Card Analyst, both of which gave her excellent job experience. She was then hired as a Payment Services Manager in 2022, where she is happy to work with her team to assist day-to-day work, but moreover, she finds that inspiring people and allowing her team to feel fulfilled and confident about their work is what she enjoys doing the most.

Kelli’s initial career goals included becoming a professor or researcher and specializing in Spanish Education and Literature. However, after working and interacting with the IPPS Travel team as a senior student, she quickly changed her mind and opted to pursue a career in finance. She was ambitious to enter the finance and accounting fields and major in the humanities, but she really appreciated the policy of numbers, which let her see things more clearly and always led to the correct answers in the end.

One of her biggest achievements, she said, was with Virtual Card; her team earned the US Bank Best-in-Class award for the first time ever, defeating all other UCs (University of California) as well as some National Labs and elevating UC San Diego to the top. In addition to the Best-in-Class she also received a Spotlight Award presented by Chief Procurement Officer Paul Williams, which meant a lot to her career, and she enjoyed winning.

Kelli found it difficult but incredibly fulfilling to take on the major leadership role of manager when she joined the Payment Services team. Nonetheless, she stated that her disposition towards assembling teams at work and the excellent leadership role models she had in IPPS in the past had equipped her for this current position. Her philosophy is that having someone believe in you and advocate for you makes such a big difference along the way.

Since 2017, Kelli has enjoyed spending her free time rock climbing. She visits a San Diego climbing gym that offers a variety of climbing techniques. Once or twice a year, she climbs real rocks outdoors in national parks like Bishop National Park and Red Rock in Nevada. Kelli’s dream is to climb La Peña de Bernal, which is located just over 3 hours from Mexico City. It was her favorite childhood hiking spot, and she is very excited about sharing an experience with her grandfather someday. In the future, she dreamed of climbing in Spain, Thailand, and all over the world.

David Gomez by James Hern

David Gomez

By James Hern

David Gomez has been working at UC San Diego for 17 years, where his career started in a temporary position as a Receiver within Logistics. He transitioned to the Storehouse team on the night shift, working late nights from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., and then moved to Surplus Sales.

Currently, David oversees the Moving Services and Surplus Sales inventory & merchandising based out of the Logistics Hub at Trade Street. He and his team are responsible for collecting equipment that campus departments no longer need, bringing it back to the Trade Street warehouse, and cataloging each item. The team then repurposes the surplused equipment for other departments or the public to purchase, working to ensure that they divert as much material as possible from the landfill. They donate spare resources to organizations such as the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), that can benefit from equipment like wheelchairs, walkers, and canes.

David has worked in Surplus Sales for over 16 years and assumed the leadership role after Steve VanDuine retired. He is especially proud of the transition from SSIS (Surplus Sales Information System), a homegrown inventory and sales system that had been in use for over 20 years, to the current system. Over time the coding for SSIS became obsolete and during the COVID-19 pandemic, he was able to spend time researching alternative systems, ultimately implementing a modern Point-of-Sales system (POS) with greatly improved efficiency.

Outside of work, David enjoys home improvement projects. He bought a house three years ago with his wife and has been working on projects such as updating the backyard fencing. They have an adorable 2-year-old boy named Jacq and love to take him to the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. David and his wife are talking about doing something special for their upcoming 10th anniversary.

AleJandra (Alex) Gutierrez-Burgos by James Hern

Alex with family and her grand-daughter

AleJandra (Alex) Gutierrez-Burgos

By James Hern

Alex started working for UC San Diego in 1993 with Disbursements in a temporary position that turned into a full-time position a few months later. Alex has held just about every role there is in Disbursements. She has experience with prior systems, which has given her the knowledge to tackle most issues that cross her path.

Before working for UC San Diego, Alex worked in data entry at Synaptic in San Jose. She has always worked in sales and vaunts her ability to sell almost anything. Alex came to San Diego on a whim to provide moral support to a close friend but ended up staying permanently after being charmed by the city. She loved the accessibility of the beaches and that she could be closer to family members who lived in both San Diego and Tijuana. Alex briefly worked for a mortgage company in downtown La Jolla before coming to work at UC San Diego.

Currently, Alex handles the Problem Resolution role in Accounts Payable like a pro and doubles as the Work Lead for undergraduate students within AP. Working with students has been immensely rewarding for Alex and continuing to connect with them after they have graduated is a blessing to her. She prefers a more hands-on learning method, being present in the office as much as possible, having open discussion meetings, and facilitating two-way communication with different authority levels, which has been a great example to the students.

Outside of work, Alex is a strong advocate for physical activity, loves to decorate and travel, and encourages other women to build communities with each other for support, sharing, and connection. Alex believes in the positive effects that physical activity can have in all aspects of our lives and encourages everyone to engage in some form no matter the difficulty level or age. She frequently attends various classes like running, spin, boxing, and more! Alex loves decorating the interior of her home, especially for the holidays. She can easily envision the design of a room just by looking at one piece of tile.

Travel is big for Alex, and she loves to go on trips with any of her friends and her family. She met her husband, Andre, at UC San Diego in Business and Financial Services who at the time worked in Systems as a Linux expert. Together they have three wonderful kids and one beautiful granddaughter.

Irvin Palacios by Carol Chen

Irvin Palacios

By Carol Chen

As tradition with each new edition of IPPS Quarterly, we’d like to invite you to learn about a member of our team. This time, we’re proud to spotlight Irvin Palacios!

A first-generation Mexican-American college graduate, Irvin studied economics at UC San Diego and started working for IPPS right out of college in 2015, beginning in the Accounts Payable department. However, he always had an interest in working with quantitative data and market research, and eventually moved over to Technology Management. Irvin’s proudest project has been developing the IPPS Executive Dashboard, which consolidates important data metrics and analytics for directors and stakeholders alike. With his technical expertise and existing interest in data analytics, Irvin was able to provide incredibly valuable input towards the development of the program. His main approach to tackling such a key project was to be a good listener: while communication in all aspects was paramount, it was just as important to properly understand the primary needs of the users and provide the right tools to support their work. As a result of this, the first impression many in IPPS have of Irvin is that he’s very easy to talk to– not only as a conversationalist, but also as a listener.

Outside of work, Irvin recently got married– during the pandemic in 2020– and enjoys spending time with his wife, Leah, and dog, a Westie named Lulu. A hobby that Irvin recently discovered thanks to his wife is gardening– the front yard of their home is currently adorned with a variety of tomatoes, jalapeños, and raspberries. Irvin also enjoys spending time in nature and tries to get outside, whether it be hiking or exploring the gorgeous natural scenery of San Diego, at least once a week. Need an escape from the mundanities of the office? Check out some of Irvin’s favorite spots, which include Mission Bay, which is close to his home, Kate Sessions Park in Pacific Beach, and the Sunset Cliffs in the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find him there!

Kelsey Moon by Mary Wong

Kelsey with her dogs

Kelsey Moon

By Mary Wong

Kelsey began her career at UC San Diego in 2004 in the Biology department. When Kelsey realized she found the travel-related processes the most fulfilling, she transitioned to the Travel office when the opportunity arose in 2006 and has been with IPPS ever since! Kelsey’s role as the Travel Program Manager is to promote awareness of UC travel programs so the campus community understands the full value of our negotiated rates and benefits.

When conversing with Kelsey, one thing I immediately noticed is her determination and genuine desire to serve her clients. For example, on a recent trip to Toronto, Kelsey would take mental notes of her own airport experience to better understand the business traveler's perspective, in order to work with travel partners to ensure improved outcomes for her campus clients. She enjoys translating travel policy into something more accessible, easy to digest, and easy to practice. Kelsey’s dedication to her work has even led her to be named a national advisory board member for the Society for Collegiate Travel and Expense Management (SCTEM)!

On a more personal level, one of Kelsey's greatest joys in life is her dogs, Emmett Bartholomew Gorrie-Moon (border collie husky mix) and Larky Biscuits (a chaotic mix—her words, not mine). Having worked for the San Diego Humane Society in the past, she enjoys making a difference for the animals in her life and building a special bond with the critters in her home. Emmett is known to sing the songs of his people and Lark embodies all the personalities of the 15 breeds she has in her blood. Kelsey and her partner Wil have a monthly tradition of heading to the family’s cabin nestled in the woods to enjoy time away in nature. On the agenda? Simply eat, nap, and go on hiking adventures with the dogs in tow. Sounds like a great time!

Mary Wong by Kelsey Moon

Mary Wong

By Kelsey Moon

The chances are high that you have directly benefited from the work of Mary Wong, IPPS’s Sourcing and Partnerships Manager. Mary is the central point of contact for our University partners like Farmers Insurance, Lyft, Airbnb, and the newly launched University Credit Union. Mary works to stand up programs that benefit the campus community, connecting partners with key stakeholders while keeping the entire campus audience in mind.

A UC San Diego graduate, Mary worked in private purchasing for a few years before seizing an opportunity to come back to the University to do something that combined her experience in supply chains with her desire to directly impact her Alma Mater in positive ways. Being on the Campus Partnership Team means you need to be a bright, quick, positive person with a genuine interest and commitment to benefiting the University. Mary is sincerely vested in seeing the direct benefits of her efforts. One particularly special program was working with Airbnb to provide credits for student programs, where she was able to provide housing vouchers for people in need. She was also involved in large-scale efforts to implement campus’ new financial software systems.

Years ago Mary had written off the chance to have a dog. At the start of the Covid pandemic, Mary was able to use her skills at negotiation on her husband Ben, who conceded that a dog wouldn’t be a bad thing after all. The deal was Mary got to have a dog, but Ben got to choose the breed and name. The result of those negotiations was a Shiba Inu named Seb. The Netflix documentary series Drive to Survive about Formula One racing captured the couples’ interest, and Seb is named after a Formula One driver. Seb’s motto is run fast, dig hard, sleep deep; not entirely unlike Mary’s unofficial motto of work hard, bring excellence, positively impact.

Mary is accustomed to making decisions and deftly crafting positive relationships at work, but her personal life just might be a little different. She jokes that if Ben doesn’t decide on something, they don’t do it. With a bright smile and easy laugh she goes on to say that when Ben does introduce her to something new she ends up stealing the spotlight and being better at it – no surprise to those of us who work with her!  On a recent Ben-inspired deep sea fishing trip, Mary was the one who ended up with the largest yellowtail.

We can all thank Mary for her vision, commitment, and passion for positively impacting the campus community.

Matt Oborne by Greg Jackson

Matt with his kid at the beach

Matt Oborne

By Greg Jackson

Once more the IPPS Quarterly invites you to get to know an IPPSter. In this edition we’d like to introduce you to Matt Oborne.

Matt started his UC San Diego career three years ago with IPPS managing the Travel and Entertainment (T&E) Card program.

He has 14 years of experience managing various merchant services. Having limited experience with UC San Diego’s previous Travel Card processes allowed Matt to bring a new perspective and insight to the Concur rollout. With his proficiency and dexterity with merchant services, and the dynamic expectations of clients, his approach to the campus-wide Concur rollout was: Be understanding, avoid negativity, relax and find a solution. Having to explain the advantages of how the T&E card could improve real-time transactional reviews, create efficient accounting methods and have seamless integration into Concur was daunting at best. But Matt was built to lead and found enjoyment in educating and training the entire campus community.

When home, Matt is surrounded by his wife, Lisa, and son Dylan who provide him with all the support and stability one could hope for. He reciprocates with his love for cooking gourmet dinners using robust ingredients. He loves preparing authentic Japanese and Italian/Mediterranean cuisines, and also loves going to farmers' markets for inspiration to cook whatever looks best that day. Matt is also passionate about golf and really enjoys getting out to Torrey Pines on the weekends whenever he gets a chance. His 4-year-old son Dylan is turning into quite the golfer and Matt enjoys taking him along to the driving range and golf course. Matt and his family are experienced campers with various stays at campsites across the US. After briefly talking with Matt you will instantly find his calming demeanor to be reassuring, especially as we navigate these changing times.

Scottie Profitt by Trent Tomoyasu

Scottie Profitt

By Trent Tomoyasu

This year, we are debuting a new IPPS Quarterly series, highlighting IPPSters who have been vital to our success as an organization. For our first IPPSter Spotlight, we had the opportunity to talk to Scottie Profitt, who just celebrated his 30th year with the university.

Scottie Profitt started his UC San Diego career at the age of 18, working as a Storehouse Worker at what is now Trade Street. From there he went on to manage the SIO Storehouse, where he would go on to work for 10 years. During his time at SIO, Scottie took full advantage of his work location and regularly enjoyed surf sessions at Scripps Beach. But all good things come to an end and in 2004, the university sunset the SIO Storehouse. Fortunately, Scottie was able to leverage his experience handling hazardous materials at SIO and found a job at Trade Street managing outbound shipping. For the past 18 years, Scottie has worked at Trade Street, where he has been integral to the establishment of the Hazardous Materials Team. He is currently the Associate Director of Logistics and Dangerous Goods, where he ensures that all chemical, biological, radioactive, and physical materials are properly stored, moved, and disposed of. He and his team have done a tremendous job preventing hazmat accidents and have saved the university from countless six-figure fines for improper shipping and disposal. Outside of work, Scottie spends much of his time with his son, Banyan, who documents their family adventures on his YouTube vlog,  Banyan's Adventures. Recently, in addition to celebrating 30 years of service at UC San Diego, Scottie has also celebrated his 30th anniversary with his wife. He cited his marriage as a major reason for taking his first UC San Diego job saying, “it is what made me get a real job instead of working at a convenience store.” We cannot stress enough how grateful we are for all that Scottie and his team do to keep our campus safe.
